Overview
10 months unburied. Court rules May 21. Can the govt bring him home by June?
Settlement criteria
Former President Edgar Lungu died in Pretoria on 5 June 2025. Nearly a year later, his remains have not been buried — caught between his family, who want a private burial in South Africa, and the Zambian government, who insist on a state funeral at the presidential burial site in Lusaka. The case for YES. The legal momentum is shifting toward the government. A Pretoria High Court ruled in August 2025 that the remains should be released to Zambia. The family's appeal collapsed after they missed filing deadlines. On 22 April the government briefly took custody of the body before a counter-order paused the transfer. The next hearing is set for 21 May — and the interim order itself contemplates handing the body to Zambia on that date. Attorney General Kabesha has said President Hichilema is willing to stay away from the funeral if it helps break the deadlock. If the court rules in the government's favour on 21 May, repatriation and a state funeral could happen within days. The case for NO. The Lungu family has blocked every attempt so far — stopping the original funeral service mid-ceremony in June 2025, filing appeals, and obtaining emergency counter-orders within hours of the government taking custody. Makebi Zulu, the family spokesperson, has shown no sign of backing down. Even if the May 21 ruling goes against the family, they could file further appeals. A South African police inquest into Lungu's death also remains open, which could complicate the release of remains. Ten months of legal trench warfare suggests this won't resolve quickly. Resolution deadline: 23:59 CAT on 30 June 2026. YES resolution (all must apply): The remains of former President Edgar Lungu are physically interred — placed in a grave or crypt — on Zambian soil. The burial is confirmed by official government statement, ECZ/state media coverage, or verified reporting from at least two major Zambian news outlets (e.g. ZNBC, Lusaka Times, Mwebantu). The burial takes place on or before 30 June 2026. NO resolution: The remains have not been interred on Zambian soil by 23:59 CAT on 30 June 2026. This includes scenarios where: The body remains in South Africa (whether at Two Mountains Funeral Parlour, a government facility, or any other location). The body is repatriated to Zambia but not yet buried by the deadline. The body is buried in South Africa or any country other than Zambia. Void conditions: None. This market resolves YES or NO with no void scenario. Either he is buried in Zambia by 30 June or he isn't. Source: Official Zambian government statement and/or verified reporting from at least two major Zambian news outlets.
